What we call a "country"
The 193 UN member states, plus the Holy See and Palestine (observer states): 195 in total. Dependent territories and partially recognised states are not part of the quizzes. When a country has several seats of government (South Africa, Bolivia, Eswatini, Yemen, Sri Lanka, Israel/Palestine, Indonesia in transition), we do not ask capital questions to avoid disputed answers.
